Art of the Later Middle Ages: Giotto (1265-1337)

The Florentine painter Cimabue is the originator of modern painting. He was the teacher of Giotto, the outstanding painter of the Late(est) Middle Ages / Early(est) Renaissance. This famous picture of the Madonna with children was carried with holy joy to Santa Maria Novella where it was the altarpiece.
